Reimagining Florida, Durban Style

It’s our first free evening in Durban and we’ve decided to check out what all the locals are talking about: Florida Road.  Known as “The Heartbeat of Durban”, this main street in the city offers the best of Durban cuisine, fashion, and nightlife.

We’re excited to see what all the fuss was about, so we decide to dine at Cappello, a restaurant with the simple and direct tagline, “Food. Passion. People.”  Surprisingly, we are the only ones in the entire restaurant throughout the meal.  The food is great, and the staff is certainly passionate, but where on Earth are the people?!  If this is really the so-called heartbeat of Durban, I fear we may need to check the city’s vital signs…

It turns out that we are indeed on the right road, but we’ve got the timing all wrong.  Although we Americans thought it seemed appropriate to dine out at 6:30pm, this time is much to early for the typical Durban night owl crowd!  Our waitress tells us that people here usually don’t go out to eat until at least 8:00pm, and Florida Road becomes most active around midnight or later.  This is a bit of a change from the typical dining routine where I’m from, but I’m optimistic that the adjustment may satisfy my rather nocturnal tendencies!  After finishing our unintentionally early bird special, we’ve decided that we’ll try to meet and observe the trendy locals on Florida another time…preferably one that is more in sync with their late night dining schedules!

  1. I really like your writing style, good info, regards for putting up :D. “Every moment of one’s existence one is growing into more or retreating into less.” by Norman Mailer.
